The weather wasn’t too kind to us the day we turned up to shoot, but we were soon warmed up by the beautiful roaring fire, that owner Edward kindly stoked up for us.
This impressive property belongs to the Aitken family, the fourth generation of Aitken’s living on ‘Craigforth’ farm in a beautiful homestead just along the road. For years the family visited the site where The Point now resides, with the dream of building there. Finally in 2008 the project was started. Working with the Aitkens, architects Warren & Mahoney designed this contemporary ‘off-grid’ house, and it was built by local company Kevin Templeton Builders. The sheltered site offers sea views on three sides, with the house having solar design and featuring an impressive thirty metre ‘rammed earth’ wall, made from local materials.
What they have created is an understated yet sophisticated getaway that doesn’t skimp on any luxuries. There is access to the beach, and you can walk around the private bay to view the farm homestead, gardens and surrounds. The private setting and beautiful outlook give you the feeling you’re somewhere off the beaten track, despite only being a 90 minute drive from Christchurch.
If you’re looking for a stylish escape away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, you’ve found it.
