Brewed Protein™ is a next-generation fibre created through precision fermentation, transforming plant-based sugarcane into a protein material inspired by cashmere, silk and wool.
It is the only man-made protein fibre to be successfully industrialised, bringing together organic origins and advanced technology in a way that signals a new direction for fashion. Untouched World is the first brand in New Zealand to introduce Brewed Protein™ into its collections, offering an early look at a material designed for comfort, performance, and a lighter environmental footprint.

Fibre Certifications & Trust Marks

Our certifications and trustmarks offer a transparent view into these standards, giving you confidence in how and where your clothing is made. Each one reflects a commitment to responsible materials, ethical practices, and long-term quality—so you can wear with clarity and trust.
What is Brewed Protein™?
Brewed Protein™ is a next-generation fibre made through precision microbial fermentation. Instead of coming from animals like sheep or goats , it begins with plant-based sugarcane and is transformed into a protein-based material using advanced DNA technology.
Developed by Spiber, the fibre is designed to mirror the qualities of traditional luxury materials. It can feel as soft as cashmere, as smooth as silk, and carry the natural loft of wool. The result is a plant-derived material that blends natural origins with scientific innovation.
How it’s made and how it performs
The process starts with sustainably sourced sugarcane, which is fermented in a controlled environment similar to brewing. This converts plant sugars into protein polymers that form the fibre.
Brewed Protein™ is designed for everyday comfort and longevity. Its scaleless structure helps reduce pilling and keeps the surface smoother over time. It is low in prickliness, gentle on the skin, and naturally breathable due to its ability to absorb and release moisture.
The focus is on creating a material that feels refined to wear while remaining practical over time
Environmental impact and future thinking
Compared to traditional cashmere, Brewed Protein™ has the potential to significantly reduce environmental impact. Lifecycle assessments show:
- Up to 99% less land use
- Up to 97% less water use
- Up to 82% less eutrophication impact on waterways
The fibre is also designed with end-of-life in mind. In testing, undyed woven samples broke down naturally within months, depending on fabric structure and weight.
Production is supported by traceable, certified sugarcane sourced from Thailand, with close collaboration across growers and partners. It reflects a broader shift towards materials built through transparent relationships and long-term thinking.
Vietnam
Our Vietnam suppliers are Betterwork certified, a UN and IFC-backed programme that upholds fair working conditions and labour rights across the garment industry.
Their manufacturing complex is Vietnam's first LEED Platinum accredited plant, running on 30% renewable energy, harvesting rainwater to cut production water use by 60%, and growing fresh produce on a rooftop garden for staff meals. Workers earn a living wage in a clean, accessible, well-ventilated environment.
In mid-2024, our General Manager visited in person — and came back impressed. Happy staff, high standards, and sustainability claims we can personally stand behind. Exactly the kind of partners we're proud to work with.
