Regenerative Farming

For decades, we’ve worked with the highest quality, ethically sourced merino wool.

At Untouched World, we want our animal and plant fibre suppliers to use systems and practices to give back to the environment from which they are produced while providing animals with a high-quality life. This reflects the principles of regenerative farming, which, in essence, involves putting back more than is taken. Regenerative farming adopts a holistic, systems-oriented perspective on land stewardship, utilising various principles to enhance productivity and biodiversity over time. Typically, the focus is on improving soil health and functionality as the primary means to boost productivity and biodiversity.

“The principle of regenerative farming, in essence, is putting back more than is taken.”

— CHRIS JOHNS, Glenthorne Station

Among other things, the loss of soil fertility and the soil itself, degradation of our water and loss of biodiversity threaten our planet and, therefore, all living things. We embrace the concepts of regenerative farming as it strives to improve the farming environment through practices that:

  1. Minimise disturbance: Reducing or eliminating tillage and chemical inputs lets the soil ecosystem do what it does naturally. Less interference means healthier, more resilient land over time.
  2. Establish a living root system: Plants are quietly doing extraordinary work beneath the surface. Through photosynthesis, they feed the microbes living in the soil, creating a thriving underground community that keeps the land alive and productive.
  3. Provide soil armour: Bare soil is vulnerable soil. Keeping the ground covered protects it from erosion, locking in nutrients and preventing precious topsoil from washing away with every rainfall.
  4. Integrate animals: Livestock aren't just part of the landscape, they're active contributors to it. Through grazing, fertilising, and aerating the soil, animals play a vital role in restoring and maintaining the land's natural balance.
  5. Enhance biodiversity: A healthy planet is a diverse one. Supporting the full web of plants, animals, insects and microbes isn't just good farming practice, it's essential for the survival of everything that depends on this earth.

By working with these principles and striving to achieve these outcomes, the planet will be able to care for all living things that it supports. At Untouched World, we are committed to supporting regenerative farming practices through our fibre sourcing.

Our Supply Chain

Glenthorne Station

Over 90% of the Merino wool we use in our collections is sourced from Glenthorne Station, a ZQRX™ accredited farm in the beautiful high country, just 110km away from our workrooms.

This beautiful piece of unspoilt South Island land is the source of all the merino used in our Mountainsilk™, Total Easy Care Merino, and CoolTree™ collections. Glenthorne merino is grown to the highest standards of animal, social, and environmental welfare and is leading the way in regenerative farming practices.

"Glenthorne Station occupies over 62,000 acres of beautiful land, all managed according to regenerative farming principles and certified by New Zealand Merino’s ZQ™ and ZQRX standard.”

The ZQRX™ Standard

ZQRX is a new and improved standard, driving a shift towards a regenerative movement in which growers aim to give more than they take at a meaningful scale. For some time, ZQ™ growers have been going above and beyond to nurture the earth and restore the resources they work with. ZQRX recognises this hard work while identifying the following steps and sharing ideas and methods around best practices to drive regenerative outcomes. We continue supporting growers like Glenthorne, who set the bar for the rest of the market.
